Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas. It is largely a result of climatic variations and unsustainable land use practices, such as overgrazing, over-cultivation, and poor irrigation. Desertification contributes to poverty, famine, and the deterioration of natural resources. Over 250 million people are directly affected by desertification.
