In the realm of sustainable development, trade is increasingly one of the most vital and powerful levers imaginable. It has never before been so important. In recognition of this, Earth Council Geneva has developed innovative, country-based training programs that can educate your citizens, and enable them to both understand and negotiate trade issues on a global scale. Smart trade negotiators can position a country for optimal progress and change, while those less-informed sacrifice control and influence over this critical process, a process that can determine a country’s future for years to come. Knowledge is power. Earth Council’s Global Trade and Sustainable Development e-Learning Program can give your people this training, this understanding, and this indispensable capacity. Our Philippines project, offering basic certification on the WTO, trained over 400 government and civil employees within a 12-month period. In resounding testimony to this pragmatic approach, 100% of the students asserted that they would recommend the courses to their colleagues, and indicated a high level of satisfaction with both the course content and their resulting capabilities. Another project is being developed with the Wuhan University WTO Studies School in China, following a successful pilot effort in 2006, where 150 participants took three courses developed in Chinese. For more information, see The China WTO Literacy Program And we have learned from our initial efforts. Courses can be tailored to fit the particular needs of individual countries. With clearer milestones, we can deliver the course material at an accelerated pace and complete classes in a shorter time frame. We can create new courses to answer contemporary demands. The Philippines-Australia Human Resources Development Facility (PAHRDF) identified dozens of training gaps in their 2005 Scoping Study, and ECG is prepared to develop curriculum with world experts to address just those needs. The benefits of online training are clear, immediate, and lauded by almost all of the institutions and organizations involved in world trade policy, WTO negotiations, and capacity building endeavors. To join Earth Council Geneva in one of its online educational programs would be one of the most powerful and significant steps a country or an organization could make to build capacity among its citizens.
